The Primary School of Kalavasos is a historic educational institution that has been shaping young minds since 1854. With a rich heritage and a focus on cultural, social, and environmental awareness, the school continues to provide a creative and dynamic learning environment for its students.
The first official school in Kalavasos was established during British rule in 1887, according to the first recorded evidence from the British Administration’s official records. At the same time, a small Turkish school was also in operation, teaching the children of the Turkish Cypriot community the Turkish language and history.
The Primary School of Kalavasos first operated in 1854, with its first teacher being Priest Papanikolas, who taught children religious studies.
During the early years of the Republic of Cyprus, the Greek school of Kalavasos functioned as an eight-grade school for a brief period between 1961 and 1963. There were six teachers in the primary section and two additional teachers in the eight-grade level. Students attended lessons such as home economics, arts, carpentry, mechanics, electrical work, gardening, and English.
The original six-grade school building was located next to the Library Hotel, but its condition was not ideal. In 1987, thanks to a donation from Evangelos Dimitrios Liveris, a new building was constructed, and the school was renamed Livereio, in honor of its benefactor.
At Livereio Primary School of Kalavasos, education extends beyond the classroom with a variety of school activities that enhance learning, social awareness, and personal development. Through educational visits, cultural events, environmental initiatives, and sports activities, students gain valuable experiences that enrich their daily school life.
